Fall sports season comes to an end
Few upsets were registered in the finals this year
With the state football championships decided Friday and Saturday, the fall season for high school athletics officially moved into the winter.
Jesuit, Summit and Newport ended up as the biggest winners from fall claiming two state titles from among the four sports: cross country, volleyball, soccer and football.
Jesuit won titles in girls cross county and volleyball at the 6A classification, Summit won girls cross country and boys soccer at 5A and Newport won 4A boys cross country and boys soccer.
Here's a rundown on the state champions:
CROSS COUNTRY
Summit won in the 5A girls team race - its 16th straight title, and Crescent Valley junior Emily Wisniewski won the 5A girls race for her third title to highlight the day.
GIRLS
6A: Jesuit won its second-straight team title with Jesuit junior Emma Bennett claiming the individual title.
5A: Only a few seconds separated Summit (64 points) from Crater (66) for the team title. Wisniewski won the race by more than one minute.
4A: Philomath beat La Grande 66-71 in team scoring in spite of the La Grande trio of junior Cecilia Villagomez, sophomore Brooke Perry and senior Emily Tubbs finishing 1-2-3, respectively, in the race.
3A/2A/1A: Oregon Episcopal won the team title, while Valley Catholic junior Jaya Simmons won the individual title.
BOYS
6A: Franklin won the boys team race, while West Salem senior Jack Meier won the individual title.
5A: Crater won its third-straight team title, avenging the girls result as Summit finished second. Crater juniors Tayvon Kitchen and Josiah Tostenson finished 1-2, respectively, in the race.
4A: Newport celebrated the team title, while Cottage Grove junior Carter Bengtson won the race by 41 seconds.
3A: Vale senior Trevor Stewart edged Enterprise junior Jett Leavitt by just one second in the race, while Valley Catholic claimed the team title.
2A/1A: Union/Cove beat Knappa by just three points in the team race, while Heppner senior Grady Greenwood won the individual title.
VOLLEYBALL
Teams seeded No. 1 or No. 2 won all six finals with three going to a fifth set.
6A: Top seed Jesuit rallied from a two-set deficit to beat third seed Oregon City in the final, winning the fifth set 15-13.
5A: Top seed Crescent Valley beat No. 7 Bend in a four-set final.
4A: Second seed Marist beat top seed Marshfield in the final, claiming the fifth set 17-15.
3A: Top seed Sisters beat second seed Pleasant Hill in a four-set final.
2A: No. 2. Portland Christian beat No. 4 Salem Academy for the title, taking the fifth set 16-14.
1A: Top seed Crane beat No. 6 St. Paul in a four-set final.
SOCCER
Teams seeded first, second or third won all eight titles.
GIRLS
6A: Second seed Grant beat Portland rival and fourth seed Cleveland 3-2 in overtime in the final. Grant outscored its five opponents 21-3.
5A: No. 1 Wilsonville beat No. 3 North Eugene 2-0 in the final.
4A: No. 3 North Marion beat No. 1 Marist 5-4 on penalty kicks in the final after the teams tied 1-1 in regulation and overtime.
3A/2A/1A: No. 2 Catlin Gabel beat No. 1 Valley Catholic 5-4 on penalty kicks for the title, after the teams tied 1-1 up to that point.
BOYS
6A: No. 1 Lakeridge beat Jesuit 3-2 in overtime in the final, outscoring its five opponents 19-4 along the way.
5A: No. 2 Summit beat No. 8 Hood River Valley 1-0 in the final, outscoring its four opponents 17-2 along the way.
4A: No. 2 Newport/Waldport beat No. 4 Cottage Grove 2-1 in overtime in the final.
3A/2A/1A: No. 3 McLoughlin beat No. 1 Westside Christian 3-1 in the final.
FOOTBALL
Top-ranked teams went 3-2 from among the seven finals with No. 10 Echo at 1A 6-man finishing as the lowest-seeded champion.
6A: No. 4 Central Catholic topped No. 2 Tualatin 49-21 a week after beating No. 1 West Linn.
5A: No. 1 Wilsonville beat No. 3 Mountain View 29-23.
4A: No. 1 Henley beat No. 2 Marist 48-28 finishing off an unbeaten season.
3A: No. 2 Cascade Christian finished off an unbeaten season with a 34-24 win over No. 1 Banks.
2A: No. 3 Lowell beat No. 1 Weston-McEwen/Griswold 74-42.
1A 8-MAN: No. 1 Lost River beat No. 2 Crane 30-20 in the lowest-scoring final of the championship weekend.
1A 6-MAN: No. 10 Echo beat No. 4 Joseph 47-40.
