A late-season scoring surge by team legend Christine Sinclair helped the Portland Thorns play into the NWSL Fall Series Supporters Shield Saturday with a 2-1 road win over Seattleā€™s OL Reign.

Sinclair scored twice on penalty kicks to give her six goals in four matches.

Portland won three of its four matches and tied the other in the Fall Series, which the league created after its mid-year tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Sinclair led the league in scoring during the fall season.

Houston won three of its four matches for nine points and finished second.

Christine Sinclair continued her scoring surge with a goal that helped the Thorns settle for a draw at Utah, Oct. 3.

Portland dominated possession (60 percent to 40), but managed just five shots on goal. But, the outcome helped the team continue its hold on the league lead lead with seven points through three matches.

Trailing 1-0, Sinclair put home a loose ball in front of the Utah goal in the 59th minute for the equalizer.

Christine Sinclair put her emphatic stamp on Wednesday night's game with Seattle's OL Reign with a hat trick, leading the Portland Thorns to a 4-1 victory at Providence Park.

Sinclair scored on a penalty kick and put two other balls into the net off solid passes.

First-year teammate Rocky Rodriguez scored her first goal of the season with a highlight finish on a cross from Lindsey Horan.

The Thorns play at Utah on Saturday continuing the NWSL's Fall series, which will be the team's third match in seven days.

Sophia Smith made her debut for the Portland Thorns as memorable as possible in a 3-0 victory over the Utah Royals as part of the NWSL Fall Series Sept. 20.

Smith, the top overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft, scored in the 72nd minute off an assist by Meghan Klingenberg to boost Portland to a 2-0 lead. The Thorns, who got on the board in the 35th minute off a goal by Simone Charley, added the closing score in the 81st when Lindsey Horan put one home unassisted.

Portland continues the Fall Series Sept. 30 with a home match against the Seattle Reign.

The Thorns dominated much of the match starting with possession - 62-38 percent. They also featured nine corner kicks to just three for Utah.

The three goals surpassed the total the team managed in five matches during the Challenge Cup in July, when it scored just twice altogether.
