HILLSBORO - A pair of second-half goals, and a missed penalty kick helped Hood River Valley win the Class 5A boys soccer state title Saturday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium.

Junior Gio Magana, and senior Alex Gurierrez scored for the Eagles, and freshman Travis Running survived a penalty kick in goal as Hood River beat Woodburn 2-0 to finish the season at 18-0.

"We've been waiting for this for a long time," said Hood River coach Jaime Rivera, who led the Eagle to the finals last year. "This means everything to our community. I'm glad we finally won for them."

The game was the third straight year the teams had met in either the final or semifinals. Last year, the Eagles beat Woodburn, but lost to Summit in the final. In 2012, Woodburn beat Hood River in the semis and then won its third straight title four days later.

Woodburn finished the season at 13-3-1.

The Bulldogs actually finished the game with more shots - 15-11, and had five corner kicks to Hood River's 1. But, the Eagles got outstanding play in goal from Marcos Cuevas, and then Running, who took over in the 57th minute. In a back-and-forth game, the Eagles broke the scoreless duel when defender Uriel Torres sent a pass of roughly 30 yards to midfielder Magana, who pounced on the ball behind the Woodburn defense and scored from 10 yards out.

Woodburn had a golden chance to even the score just after the ensuing kickoff, when Crispin Rosales drew a foul in the penalty box, which set up senior Irineo Guzman for a penalty kick. Running guessed wrong, but Guzman's shot hit the left post. The rebound went to Guzman, but Running was able to get enough presence that Guzman's second shot went over the crossbar.

Hood River added another goal in the 76th minute when Gutierrez jumped on a failed clearance and scored into an open net. Magana and Gutierrez combined for nine of Hood River's shots - seven of them on target.
