Title streaks highlight Cheerleading finals

Springfield’s sixth-straight title, title runs from three other schools and Westview’s return to the top of the state highlighted the OSAA/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires cheerleading finals at Memorial Coliseum Saturday.

Springfield continued to dominate the coed division by scoring 72.5 points – tied for the highest score of the day, to edge cross-town rival Thurston by 3.25 points.

North Marion won the Class 4A small division for the fifth-straight year, Pleasant Hill won at Class 3A giving it a title in four straight years, and West Albany won at Class 5A small for the third straight year.

Springfield’s title was its 17th in the 28 years the cheerleading state finals have been held. The Millers have also finished second four times. At six straight, Springfield moved into second in title runs. The Dalles/The Dalles Wahtonka won 11 straight titles from 1998-2008.

Westview won the most coveted title, Class 6A/5A large, with a narrow win over Wilson, which won at Class 6A small year. Westview, which lost to Clackamas last year, scored 71.50 points to beat Wilson, 69.25, from among the 14-team field.

Tualatin won at Class 6A small and Brookings won at Class 4A small in other finals.
